Today’s “Tuesday’s Terrific Track” is another selection by Mark Vidler of Go Home Productions (featured previously).  This jaunty Christmas mashup seamlessly joins “Christmas Time is Here Again” by the Beatles and “More Than A Feeling” by Boston.

As the first selection of the Christmas mashup/mix collection “Santastic! Holiday Boots 4 Your Stockings“, “Christmas In Boston” is arguably the best track.  It sets the tone of the album as a fun and creative distraction from the traditional Bing Crosby/Johnny Mathis/Karen Carpenter tunes that get overplayed this time every year.  This track is sure to bring some fresh Christmas cheer.

Let’s get back to business around here. The move went well, still unpacking. But who cares, it’s Christmastime! So the rest of this month’s Tuesday’s Terrific Tracks will be holiday-themed.

This little rendition of “O Holy Night” has become infamous for being possibly the worst version of the song ever recorded. It’s equal parts Roseanne Barr, Adam Sandler, and Bill Murray’s lounge singer character from SNL mashed together with an oddly passionate, albeit out-of-tune performance that greatly overshadows the lack of talent beneath. Rumor has it that this recording was created as a serious audition/demo tape, not as a goof as it so rightfully seems when fully digested by your bleeding eardrums.

You have been warned.

Because I missed posting a terrific track last week (who knew there was a lot to do when buying a house?), you’re getting a double shot today. Today’s track comes to you by way of WFMU’s stellar 365 Days project. The tracks are from the eccentric mind of one Norman Carl Odam, otherwise known as The Legendary Stardust Cowboy. (more…)

Halloween has come and gone and I missed putting up my last scary-themed Tuesday’s Terrific Track beforehand. So I’ll do it now.

Today’s track is the classic TV theme song from the show “The Addams Family“. Written by Vic Mizzy, the tune features a sinister-sounding organ, deep-voiced rhyming, and finger snaps. What more could you ask for?

Today’s TTT is again, late. My apologies. I hope the track makes up for it. Please put the torch down and walk away.

Since it’s close to Halloween, I thought I should put up a couple of my favorite spooky tunes for this week and next. Today it’s “I Put a Spell On You” by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Released in 1957, this track was initially going to be recorded as a more straight-up blues ballad. But when some ribs, chicken, and alcohol were brought into the studio by the producer, it turned into…something else.

Screamin’ Jay almost seems possessed as he belts out the first, and best, rendition of this classic. His performance of the song was also something otherworldy, and unforgettable, making him the precursor to the shock rock more popularly associated with the likes of Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop.

This track has also been covered by many artists since its inception, including Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ray Charles, and Marilyn Manson, to name a few. I’ve included a few of those recordings here as well. But none are as good as the original.
